Rules and Responsibilities for CSC Lab Monitors

  1. You must be present for your shift to be paid. You must also log your hours in the LSU Work Day system in a timely manner, or else your pay may be delayed. Inform me of any shifts you miss and do NOT log them in Work Day.

  2. If you can’t make or accidentally miss a shift, let me know in advance, or else as soon as possible. You can miss an occastional shift with permission, but keep in mind that you do not get paid for missed shifts.

  3. You must check email daily and reply to any requests I send within 24 hours. Failure to do this more than once may result in disciplinary action. You must also complete required annual trainings in a timely manner to remain employed (I will email about these on occasion).

  4. Your job duties are primarily to be responsible for lab security and cleanliness. Please also note any complaints about functionality and forward them to me. In general, call or text me at any time if there is a problem of any kind: 985-232-5236

    1. When you first arrive in the lab (EVERY SHIFT), tour the room(s) and look at the lab equipment to make sure that nothing is missing OR broken. Press a button on every keyboard or move a mouse to wake up each computer. Turn the power on if the computer is off. Verify that the network symbol in the lower right corner of the login screen looks normal (abnormal would show a yellow or red warning icon).

    2. It is your responsibility to remove trash and clean desk surfaces (such as pencil marks, eraser debris and dust). Discard abandoned paper handouts. Move notebooks or other minor items to the printer desk. There should be a spray bottle with water and towels in the lab that can be used to clean when needed.

    3. Eating is NOT allowed in the labs, but drinks are acceptable. Ask visitors who are eating in the labs to eat outside, or discard food (or food trash) outside immediately. If anyone does not comply, just make a note of which PC they're using and the time at which they're logged in and contact me. If you notice any other problems related to someone in the lab do the same (just note the PC in use and time).

    4. If you discover obvious theft, contact me first but contact the LSU Police ias well if I'm not available. Give them my name and contact info, but an officer should also come to take a police report. If you need to leave before they arrive, call them back to inform them.

  5. Other things:

    1. At the start of your shift, text me if the door is locked (985-232-5236). Call me if I don't reply within 5 minutes. If I do not answer, call again every 10 minutes. Stay near the lab. You are considered on the clock while you wait for the door to be unlocked and will be paid even though you're not in the lab.

    2. Any visitor in the lab should have an LSU ID which they should show upon request (or be escorted by someone who does; or be recognizable to you as someone who has shown ID previously this semester).

    3. If you find anything of value accidentally left in the lab (a laptop, phone, textbook, etc.) turn the item in to Student Services (PFT room 2228) and also send me an email letting me know what was turned in. If the item has no apparent market value (such as a paper notebook), place it on the desk near the printer in the lab.

    4. At the end of your shift, if no other monitor is present lock the glass door and leave. You don't have to evict students using the room, but ask them to keep the glass door locked and exit via the wooden door. If it's the last shift of the day, remind students that the building is closed to undergrads after 10 pm (all undergrads must leave at that time).

Please let me know if you have any questions. Call or text at any time
