Computing Policies (Revised September 1, 2004) |
This describes general Computing Labs policies and regulations under
the Department of Computer Science, LSU.
- Computing Labs General Responsibilities
- The computing labs provide computing services in support
of administration, education and research.
- It is the policy of the department to ensure equitable
distribution of computing resources among users.
- The Systems Administrator reserves the right to ensure
that these resources are not being misused.
- User Responsibilities
- Users must not use each other's login id's or passwords.
- Users must not use the system for other than academic and/or administrative purposes.
- Users must not cause damage to either hardware or software.
Report any problems to lab monitors.
- Users must not use software that causes damage to the
systems or to other users.
- Users must not copy/give software to a third party
without oral/written permission from its author.
- Users should keep informed of policy changes through
announcements or motd (message of the day).
- All users must read the LSU Computer Usage Policy.
- General Purpose Computer Labs
- Computing resources are available at these General Purpose Computer Labs: Graduate Lab (256 Coates),
Unix Lab (167 Coates), and Micro lab (168 Coates). Click Computing Facilities
for further information on Computing Facilities.
- Manuals
- There is a small set of manuals available about the software
and hardware of the systems provided. Manuals could be checked
out with proper identification and for a limited time from
the lab monitors or other people in charge. IDs will be requested.
- Warning
- Absolutely NO FOODS OR DRINKS ARE ALLOWED IN THE LABS. NO SMOKING.

Computer Account Initiation/Termination Policy (October 1, 2003) |
I. ACCOUNT INITIATION
- Any person belonging to any of the categories listed below is
eligible for a computer account in the department of computer
science:
- Faculty and staff of the department of computer science
- Graduate students in both the PhD in Computer Science and Master of Science in Systems Science programs
- Undergraduate students majoring in Computer Science at the Junior (BASC 3 CSC) and Senior (BASC 4 CSC) levels
Such an account will remain active during and in between semesters.
Please read section II for account termination policies.
- Any person officially enrolled in a Computer Science class will
be issued a computer account only if the instructor requests accounts
for the whole class or for certain students in that class.
- A person working on a research project with a faculty member
of the computer science department may be eligible for an account upon
request by that faculty member and with approval from the chairman
of the computer science department.
- Except for faculty, staff and students enrolled in classes for
which accounts will be issued, any person interested in getting
an account must fill out a Computer Account Application' form
and turn it in at the main office of the department in 298 Coates Hall. Upon installation notification email will
be sent to the applicant's provided e-mail address. Applicant is responsible for picking up Account Information sheet
in person from the systems manager's office in 193 Coates.
II. ACCOUNT TERMINATION
- The department of Computer Science reserves
the right to suspend and/or terminate any account should the user of that account
violate the LSU Computer Usage Policy or the Department's Computing
Labs policy. Both policies are publicly posted at www.csc.lsu.edu.
- It is the responsibility of each user to backup/save their files
to removable media or to other systems before their account
is terminated. Only in extreme cases will the files of that
user be retrieved from backups after the account is terminated.
- All class accounts will be terminated on the commencement day of
the semester for which they were issued. Extensions can only
be granted upon request from the instructor.
- Research accounts (section I.C above) will
be terminated once the research project is over or upon notification
from the CSC faculty member.
- All other accounts will be terminated 90 days after commencement for
graduating students, or 90 days after a faculty or staff member, or a student
leaves the department of computer science.
