Basic Sciences Dean Arthur R. Choppin Honors Convocation 2010
Message From the Chair:Dear Faculty,
A number of good things have happened and are happening in our department. I am grateful to all of you for your hard work and perseverance in elevating the departments to new heights.
The College of Basic Sciences celebrated the 37th annual Dean Arthur R. Choppin Honors Convocation on March 22, 2010 at 4:30 at the LSU Faculty Club. Believe it or not, this has been the most spectacular convocation in terms of our faculty and students' accomplishments and it looked like a Computer Science Departmental Honors Convocation.
Here are some statistics:
- Students Awards:
- Outstanding Student Award: Patrick Quin (CSC & Computer Engineering Major)
- Award of Excellence - Robert James Firth (CSC with Software Engineering Major) Robert works in the development of processes for satellite imagery. He is developing the next database-driven version of the Earth Scan Lab website. He assists in creating new ways to process the data and in creating animated interfaces to display satellite imagery.
- Award of Distinction - Thomas Martin Mller(CSC & physics). Graduating in May 2010.
- Outstanding Student Award: Patrick Quin (CSC & Computer Engineering Major)
- Research Award Winners among students:

- Brandon Wayne Ross - Member of the Distributed Systems Lab Research Group led by Dr. Tevfik Kosar for the last one year. Although Brandon is a sophomore student yet, his performance in the classes as well as in the research project he is working has been far beyond than many of senior students and comparable to the graduate students.
- Brandon has developed a comprehensive test suite for the advanced Stork data scheduling system which is funded through National Science Foundation’s prestigious CAREER Award.
- He is currently working together with a postdoctoral research staff member in the implementation of advanced research modules and complex data scheduling algorithms for this state-of-the-art software. The developed software will be released soon as an open-source to hundreds of researchers working in the field from a wide variety of national and international institutions.
