Message From the Chair:

Dear Faculty,
A number of good things have happened and are happening in our department. I am grateful to all of you for your hard work and perseverance in elevating the departments to new heights.

The College of Basic Sciences celebrated the 35th annual Dean Arthur R. Choppin Honors Convocation yesterday at 4:30 at the LSU Faculty Club. Believe it or not, this has been the most spectacular convocation in terms of our faculty and students' accomplishments and it looked like a Computer Science Departmental Honors Convocation.

Here are some statistics:
  1. Faculty Research Awards: Dr. Karki - College of Basic Sciences Untenured Faculty Research Award (2008).
  2. College of Basic Sciences Graduate Teaching Award - Dr. Thomas Sterling.
  3. College of Basic Sciences Undergraduate Teaching Award - Dr. Gerald Baumgartner.
  4. Students Awards:

    1. Dr. Greg Hussey College Achievement Award: Anshul Tandon (a perfect 4.0 GPA) majoring in CSC & EE with minor in Math. A distinguished undergraduate student presently working with Prof. Sterling on ParalleX team. He has a job offer from Google from Aug 2008. This is a great accomplishment for our student.

    2. Award of Excellence - Razvan Carbenuscu (CSC & MATH major) working in the area of coastal modeling group at CCT. He has been admitted to Ph.D program in Computer Science at UC-Berkeley.

    3. Award of Distinction - Carrie Butler (CSC with Software Engineering concentration). Graduating in 2008 and has accepted a job offer from Microsoft.

  5. Research Award Winners among students:

    1. Kevin Kolz working with Prof. Gabrille Allen in the area of scientific computing. Was recognized for various accomplishments including headtracking via the wiimote sensor bar based on the work at Carnegie Mellon.

    2. Alex Nagelberg - working with Prof. Gabrielle Allen worked on SURA coastal ocean observing and prediction project and presented 2 papers in the following conferences:

In short, faculty and student excellence has always been a strength of our department and the extraordinary number of College Awards won by our faculty and students in the last few years may not be too surprising. Please join me in congratulating all the students and the faculty for their achievement.
