Program Information

OBJECTIVES:

  • To recruit and retain academically talented, financially disadvantaged students in Computer Science, Mathematics or Engineering.
  • To provide student support and mentoring programs and enhance the educational experience of scholarship recipients through workshops/ seminars, industrial outreach, and community service opportunities.
  • Increase the number of undergraduates-in particular women and minorities-in the above mentioned disciplines.
  • Promote intercultural interaction among students.


STUDENT SELECTION PROCESS AND CRITERIA

  • Students must be U.S. citizens or have permanent resident status and must be enrolled full-time in a computer science, engineering or mathematics undergraduate program.

  • Students must have financial need as defined by the U.S. Department of Education rules for federal financial aid.

  • The students must have completed high school with a 3.0 GPA and an ACT score of 25 or earned at least 30 hours of credit at LSU with a minimum GPA of 2.5.

  • A complete application, including letters of recommendation, must be submitted.

  • Personal interviews will be conducted.


ACTIVITIES

Computer and information technology training (average 2hrs/week):

  • Under the supervision of the Program Director (Dr. Iyengar) scholarship recipients will receive additional information technology training through various workshops and training programs.

  • Gain a deeper knowledge of basic computer technology and application.

  • Activities for students to experience advanced research techniques through computer
    simulation.

  • Individual meetings with instructors and graduate assistants.

Academic enhancement activities (average 1 hr/week):

  • Monthly seminars

  • Graduate school and/or industry employment fairs

  • Field trips

  • Personal mentors

  • Optional educational and industrial outreach programs

  • Academic enrichment seminars coordinated by the Office of Strategic Initiatives and the Center for Academic Success at Louisiana State University

29 students per year majoring in computer science, engineering, or mathematics disciplines will be provided scholarships.

Scholarships can be renewed until the recipient graduates.

The scholarship support is $3,125 per academic year.

The recruitment and selection of students will be based on their residency, financial need, academic record, statement of purpose, letters of recommendation and an interview.

GOAL

Increase the educational and career opportunities for academically talented, financially disadvantaged students in Computer Science, Mathematics or Engineering at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge.
